Wayne Heights Animal Hospital opened its doors in July of 1996 with a vision to provide quality veterinary services with care and compassion. This high standard of care got us where we are today. In 2007, Drs. John and Charlene Barnes purchased the facility, and have continued the hospital’s excellent reputation.

Meet the Team

Dr. John Barnes

Dr. John Barnes graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. From 1998 – 2005, he worked as a veterinarian at a local animal hospital in Hagerstown, MD. Some of Dr. Barnes’ specific areas of interest in veterinary medicine include surgery, dentistry, and veterinary orthopedic manipulation.

Dr. Barnes’ personal interests and hobbies are photography and scuba diving. He resides in Maryland with his wife, six dogs — Billy, J.J., Nibbles, Joey, Bitsy, and Mac — three cats, eleven goats, ducks, guineas, and chickens.

Dr. Charlene Barnes

Dr. Charlene Barnes also attended and graduated from Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. During her senior year in veterinary school, Dr. C. Barnes did a six-week project at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan, Canada studying dental disease in musk-oxen. She has been a small animal veterinarian since 1997 and has practiced at an all feline animal hospital in Silver Spring, MD. Prior to owning Wayne Heights Animal Hospital, Dr. C. Barnes was practicing at Frederick Emergency Animal Hospital.

Dr. Barnes lives near Wolfsville, MD with her husband, six dogs, three cats, eleven goats, ducks, guineas, and chickens. Dr. C. Barnes’ hobbies include scuba diving, cross-stitch, and spending time with her many pets.

I previously reviewed Wayne Heights Animal Hospital a few years ago as 5/5 stars, and I wanted to provide an update to my review about a recent experience that only solidifies my review from years back. My dog was extremely sick a month ago, and his prognosis was declining quickly. We had a total of four vet visits in the span of a week with Wayne Heights Animal Hospital to try to discern what was happening to him, as he continued to get worse. Despite a packed schedule, Wayne Heights managed to squeeze us in each visit. Dr. Charlene was extremely thorough and rigorous in examining my dog and ordering labwork to try to figure out what was going on. After vet visit number four, we had somewhat of an idea of what could be making him sick, and we had managed to stabilize him with myriad medications (including a medication a staff member went out of the way to drive to pick up for me), but we still did not have concrete answers because we needed advanced diagnostic imaging tools found only in a specialized practice. Dr. Charlene managed to get me an appointment with internal medicine just a few days later, an incredible feat in specialized veterinary medicine. What I'll never forget though, was how Dr. Charlene ended our fourth appointment. She looked up at me and she told me she was sorry we didn't have more answers, and she offered me a hug. As she gave me a hug, all of the stress and uncertainty from the week gave way, and I started to cry. She held me as I sobbed. It was an incredible moment of compassion and empathy, and I am so grateful to have a veterinarian who cares for my dog as much as I do. Very happy to report that I now have my happy, mischievous dog back, all thanks to Wayne Heights Animal Hospital. Wayne Heights has been with us through years of annual check-ups, a broken toe, and even some pulled teeth. I love their staff (and so does Chester!) and am so grateful for everything they've done for us. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else.
